How I help

I bring an in-depth and personal understanding of the horse industry to legal matters affecting horse businesses and transactions. My practice is focused on equestrian and corporate law, with an emphasis on four kinds of work.

Contract drafting and review

Purchase and sale agreements, leases, boarding and training contracts, liability releases and other equine agreements, drafted to fit your arrangement or reviewed before you sign. You get clear terms and a plain-language explanation of your obligations, the risks, and the terms worth asking to change.

Ask about contracts

Negotiation

When terms need to change or a deal hits a snag, I negotiate on your behalf with buyers, sellers, trainers, facilities and their counsel, working toward terms that protect your interests.

Ask about negotiation

Corporate structure and risk management

Advice for barns, trainers, breeders and other equestrian businesses on how to organize and protect the business: choosing and setting up an entity such as an LLC, structuring partnerships and shared ownership of horses, and identifying liability risks in your operations and agreements before they become disputes.

Ask about business advice

Counseling

Guidance for owners, riders, trainers and barn operators on the legal side of equestrian life: structuring arrangements, understanding liability, thinking through a purchase or lease, and planning ahead before a problem arises.

ABOUT

Sigourney Leigh Jellins

Member of the State Bar of California · Bar No. 335365

I earned my B.A. in Political Science, with honors, from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2011. I worked and ran my equestrian training business while attending the University of San Francisco School of Law on a full scholarship. I graduated magna cum laude in 2020 and pursued my interest in securities litigation at the Silicon Valley firm Wilson Sonsini. I continued to expand my skills by transferring to the corporate group, where I worked with both start-ups in the pre-money and fundraising stages and public reporting companies. I returned to litigation with a move to the London-based firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

I founded The Legal Equestrienne to offer the legal services needed by equine businesses, owners, trainers, riders, and facilities. I bring expert-level industry knowledge to this work: over 20 years of experience as a professional horse trainer, business owner and rider. I have firsthand experience managing and negotiating countless horse purchases and sales, setting up and running equestrian businesses, and drafting liability and boarding contracts. I also dealt every day with the contracts unique to the equestrian industry, from sale and lease agreements to boarding contracts and liability releases. I know what horse owners, buyers, trainers, and clients should look for in terms of risk, corporate structure, and deal negotiation.

My background in corporate law and litigation and my equestrian professional career shape my approach to serving clients. Clients need a responsive, knowledgeable attorney to structure their businesses, advise in deal negotiations, and help them avoid risks in contracts and transactions.
